DFA means design for assembly, and its goal is to make the part or component easier to assembly and/or impossible to assembly wrongly. There are different strategies that can be followed to achieve an easier and failure-proof assembly:

  • Minimize part count
  • Modularity
  • Built-in fasteners
  • Poka-yoke strategies
  • Use of standard parts
  • Use of reasonable tolerances
  • Part symmetry
  • Avoid parts with similar shapes
  • Avoid parts that can fit in more than one place
  • Implement features to ease assembly, move, orient...

One example of a poka-yoke strategy would be to avoid same connectors in same area, or play with cable length to avoid connecting devices that are not intended to be connected to a certain cable.

Another example could be to use pin-hole strategies to hold parts in place to ease assembly.
